Air freight security
The new legal foundation for aviation security is, as of 29th April 2010, the regulation (EC) No 300/2008 of the European Parliament. With this change of legal basis there are momentous alterations.
In the following you find a list with all current information on this topic. It is possible that there could occur daily changes which will be released by the German Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt).
- Alterations
After 29th April 2010 every shipper who wants to gain the status “known shipper” has to undergo a governmental audit. Through the change of the EC regulations it is not possible anymore to receive this status by just signing a security declaration for the regulated agent. Long term clients and new customers of SDV Geis have different preconditions concerning the admission procedure.
- Long term clients
For SDV Geis clients applies a transitional period. Long term clients already have signed a “security declaration for known shippers” before the 29th April 2010 and this will be valid till the 25th March 2013. After this transitional period these clients must also face a governmental audit to be able to keep this status as known shipper. Of course customers aspiring the governmental accreditation today are able to get certified during the transitional period
The freight of long term clients is therefore “secured” and is not subject to further security checks. This way time and additional costs can be saved.
- New customers
There are two options for customers that want to work together with SDV Geis as new logistics service provider:
-
You aspire a governmental accreditation. That means after the admission your air freight shipments are transported without any further security checks and additional costs. In order to obtain the status “known shipper” you have to submit an application for the accreditation at the German Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt = LBA). Subsequently you will receive guidelines on how to do a detailed documentation of your safety measures. This documentation will be checked by the LBA. The LBA will decide whether the status will be granted or not.
Please note that the certification process is aligned with considerable costs, expenditures and maybe structural measures. The accreditation will be individual for every single branch
-
You are not interested in an accreditation and you want to stay “unknown shipper”. Your air freight shipments are “unsecured” and are subject to security checks (x-ray, sniffer and physical checks) before they are allowed to be transported in an airplane. SDV Geis is a Regulated Agent and able to arrange that your air freight shipment are being security checked.
- Recommendation
Every customer has to check for himself whether the status “known shipper” implicates the wanted advantages or if it more efficient not to undergo an accreditation process, as the regulated agent is able to arrange necessary security checks in order to make the freight secure for aviation.
